Now Hiring: Guard Caption Manager

The Northwest Youth Music Association is searching for a Guard Caption Manager to lead all aspects of the Seattle Cascades Drum and Bugle Corps Guard, which includes providing a high-quality experience centered on the health, wellness and betterment for members, staff, and volunteers.

This position’s primary responsibility is to oversee the Guard and coordinate recruiting of students and manage the audition process, lead the hiring of instructional staff, define rehearsal objectives, plan rehearsals, Manage instruments and/or equipment for rehearsal camps, spring training, and summer performance tour. The individual is expected to help establish and maintain a professional, safe, and welcoming environment for all personnel -- including students, staff, and volunteers.


The Guard Caption Manager will report to the Corps Director. This position works collaboratively with the Program Coordinator to determine the education and performance goals of the drum corps. All paid and volunteer Guard Caption Technicians of the drum corps will report to the Guard Caption Manager.


This position has a tentative start date of October 30, 2022


Duties and Responsibilities

Recruiting and Auditions

· Communicate with students eligible to return

· Manage auditions, including accept/reject/call-back status

· Promote Seattle Cascades to other students

· Monitor data about inquiries and applicants


Hiring and supervision of instructors

· Interview and recommend hiring of new instructors

· Develop and document technique program for instructors and students

· Schedule instructors for rehearsals and tour

· Observe instructors and provide feedback to improve teaching and student outcomes

· Communicate with instructors about immediate and longer-term instructional objectives


Manage and plan rehearsals

· Review and provide input on arrangements, choreography, etc.

· Review and provide input about rehearsal plans

· Communicate rehearsal plans to instructors

· Participate in cross-caption planning meetings

· Listen to recorded judge commentary and participate in post-contest critiques

· Prepare instructors for post-contest critiques

· Communicate with Program Coordinator at agreed-upon intervals


Manage instruments and/or equipment

· Communicate needs to Corps Director

· Address maintenance issues

Keep track of instrument and equipment inventory

· Communicate with volunteers regarding related products, e.g. flags, uniforms, etc.

· Maintain relationships with industry partners

· Ensure students understand the fundamentals of instrument and equipment care and maintenance


Establish a positive student experience

· Communicate with student leaders about performance and personnel issues

· Cooperate with Health Team to report and monitor injuries and illness.

· Provide mentoring and guidance to students that helps develop retention and future alumni support.

Qualifications

· One season of leading an instructional caption at the high school level or above.

· Performed one season with a DCI World Class or WGI World Class Independent Ensemble

· Communicate and work effectively with students, staff, and volunteers

· Ability to adapt to unplanned circumstances, e.g. changes to rehearsal facilities and schedules


Work Conditions

· Residing in the Seattle/Portland area, is highly preferred.

· Ability to attend winter rehearsals consistently with the corps mid-Nov to mid-June

· Ability to tour semi-consistently with the corps mid-June to mid-August

· Dealing with unplanned issues and daily schedule changes

· Travel for up to 10 hours on a vehicle, which may include tour bus, RV, van, etc.

· Sleep in a vehicle during travel

· Stand for long periods of time

· Work outdoors for up to four-hour time blocks during the summer in a variety of climates

· Ability to lift 40 lbs.
