Ryan Valencia

Portland, OR

Raised in St. Augustine, FL. Ryan has performed with numerous winterguard ensembles – including Coast One Winter Guard, Ancient City Ensemble, Northeast Independent and Northern Lights. He also marched 4 years with The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps.

Since moving to the Northwest, he has worked with several HS and independent teams throughout the region. He has been the lead designer and choreographer for Skyview HS since 2010. He also taught multiple drum corps – including Oregon Crusaders, Spirit of Atlanta, and recently with Seattle Cascades Drum & Bugle Corps. Since 2018, he has been the director and designer for Cascadia Winterguard.

Ryan graduated from Portland State University with a Master’s Degree in Global Supply Chain Management. He currently works for a natural food distributor as a Supply Chain Director.


Kurt Jull

Portland, OR

Kurt Jull has been actively designing, teaching, consulting and adjudicating the marching arts for over 40 years. He founded the Every-Body/Northern Lights Winterguards and served on the Board of Directors for Winter Guard International. Designed and choreographed for the Yokohama Japan Inspires, Madison Scouts, Oregon Crusaders, and Seattle Cascades along with numerous scholastic organizations, winterguards and dance teams. 

Kurt holds a bachelor’s degree in Interactive Media Design and is the Sr. UX Designer and Strategist with AVIBE Web Development, designing web applications for a variety of clients such as NASA, Nike, Converse and CHEF’STORE.

Design Analysis

Phil Madden

Tigard, OR

Phil Madden is a design architect specializing in aviation, military and educational design. Phil has been an instructor and an adjudicator for pageantry events for over thirty years. In the past he has served as the Chief Judge, World Class Administrator, General Effect and Ensemble Coordinator for WGI. He was the adjunct Chief Judge with Bands of America and also served for five years as the Visual Judging Coordinator for Drum Corps International. He is involved in teaching, planning and writing programs for college and high school marching bands, drum and bugle corps and winter guards. 

s pageantry resume includes initiating the winter guard program for James Logan High School as well as many winter programs that include the Seattle Cascades, Seattle Buddhist Scouts and the East Allegheny Visual Ensemble. He has also served as the Visual Coordinator for the Capital Regiment, San Jose Raiders, Valley Fever and Seattle Cascades drum corps.

He holds a Bachelors of Arts degree in Architecture with a minor in Studio Arts and History from the University of Pittsburgh and a Masters of Architecture degree from Virginia Polytechnic and State University.

General Effect

Shirl Chumley

Aurora, CO

Shirl Chumley has been involved in color guard, marching band, and drum corps pageantry arts, either through marching, instructing or adjudicating since she was a freshman in high school. We won’t say how long ago those high school years were, but suffice it to say that she has been involved in the pageantry arts for 30+ years.

Shirl has judged winter guard, drum corps, and marching band competitions across the country. She lived in Parker, Colorado, where she taught high school English in the Douglas County School District for 18 years before joining the international school teaching ranks. She spent two years opening and teaching in an international boarding school on Jeju Island, South Korea, and she lived for three years in Wassenaar, The Netherlands, where she taught high school English at The American School of The Hague and judged for Color Guard Nederlands.

In the summer of 2016, Shirl returned to Colorado and continues judging the visual and color guard captions in marching, winter, and summer seasons across the country.

Don Gallaher

Newport Beach, CA

Don has been a Visual Designer and Instructor for many High School Marching Bands, Drum Corps, Winter Guards, and Indoor Drum lines for the last 34 years. After he graduated from Chapman University with B.A. in Marketing in 1991. He began DMG Design, which provides Custom Show Design and instruction for groups throughout the United States. After many years of producing award-winning groups and programs, Don was honored in 2009 by becoming a “Hall of Fame” member of the Winter Guard Association of Southern California.

Don currently serves as an Ensemble Visual & Visual Effect judge for the following organizations:

Western Band Association (WBA), California State Band Championships (CSBC). Winter Guard Association of Southern California (WGASC) and Carolina Winter Ensemble Association (CWEA)
